Hafiz Mirza
Senior Associate, Responsible Agricultural Investment Research
Hafiz Mirza is a Senior Associate working on responsible agricultural investment (RAI) for IISD's Economic Law and Policy program. Before becoming a senior associate, Hafiz led IISD's research on RAI and was involved with a 3-year program on implementing the ASEAN Guidelines on Promoting Responsible Agricultural Investment in Food, Agriculture, and Forestry. This role also involved developing a series of case studies on agricultural investments' compliance with the Committee on World Food Security's Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems (CFS-RAI), in collaboration with several investors and impact investment funds.
Prior to joining IISD, Hafiz was the Head, Trends and Issues Branch in the Division on Investment and Enterprise at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). He oversaw statistics, databases, and trends in international investment, as well as research on foreign direct investment, trade, multinational enterprise activity, and development. This included responsibility for the thematic chapter of the annual World Investment Report, as well as many other publications.
Before UNCTAD, Hafiz was the Head of Strategy, Economics, and International Business, the largest department at the University of Bradford School of Management. He retains his academic connections, including visiting positions at a number of universities. Over the years, Hafiz has been active in research, consultancy, and writing on the nexus between international investment and development, especially in East Asia and Africa. He has published more than 60 reports and books, over 100 articles in refereed journals/book chapters, and countless conference papers.
